6 Winter Foot Care Tips for Seniors

While we may tend to take our feet for granted, we usually forget that they require extra care and protection during the winter season. This is especially true for our senior members, whose chances of experiencing foot problems increases manifold in the winters. Nevertheless, at Joseph Stuto, DPM, we advise our patients not to suffer from any winter blues. There is no reason why you cannot enjoy the outdoors.

Just follow these important measures and you are good to go:

  1. Wear comfortable shoes: Make sure your shoes provide ample support for your heels and arches and have a strong grip. This will ensure greater stability and balance.

  2. Don’t forget to exercise your feet: This may not be possible outdoors; however, you can always follow your stretching and flexing routines indoors. Use braces when necessary.

  3. Avoid dampness: With closed shoes and socks, your feet may become damp, exposing them to the risk of fungal and bacterial infections. Change your shoes immediately when you return indoors, wash and dry your feet thoroughly.

  4. Moisturizing is essential: Winters are usually dry and the air tends to dry up the skin of your feet. If left unattended, this could result in flaky or cracked skin and sores.

  5. Hygiene is critical: People tend to forget trimming their toenails in winter since their feet are almost always inside shoes and socks. Cutting toenails properly is important to avoid issues like ingrown toenails and fungal nail infections.

  6. Report any foot concerns to your podiatrist: If you have diabetes, you should visit your foot doctor regularly to identify and address any unseen yet slowly progressing foot health issues.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the health of your feet or if you require more information on effective foot protection, our expert podiatrist Dr. Joseph Stuto is available at your service.
