February is American Heart Month and at Joseph Stuto, DPM we believe that one of many ways to reduce your risk for heart disease is to maintain a healthy weight. We encourage our patients to lose weight because dropping even small amounts of weight can make a big difference in improving heart and podiatric health.

Here are a few suggestions to keep your weight in check along with lasting results.

  • Calorie restriction— What is a good serving size? It’s often smaller than you think it should be. Getting the right food in your body is extremely important when it comes to losing weight. Measure and control your portion sizes. You may want to cut back on foods you love, but not all at once. Eating fewer carbs can significantly reduce hunger levels and lead to automatic weight loss. Eat plenty of colorful vegetables, fruits, and salads. Limit foods high in saturated fat, such as cakes, pies, biscuits, chips and other savory snacks.
  • Regular Exercise— Exercise plays a big role in the health of your heart and feet. Dedicating an hour a day to exercise can help you shed some pounds, improve heart health and reduce your risks and severity of a variety of foot disorders.
  • Being overweight or obese is a problem that affects the entire body, especially your heart and feet. Do not ignore warning signs from your feet as they can reveal signs of a more serious health problem. To learn more about heart health and your feet, be sure to talk to your podiatric physician.
