People all over the world look for ways to improve their looks on a regular basis. While some people are lucky enough to accept how they look naturally, others aren’t quite as happy with their natural package. Podiatrists all over have received calls and appointments for patients of all walks of life, interested in undergoing cosmetic foot surgery to have nicer looking feet. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to look good and feel good about yourself, cosmetic foot surgery should not be taken lightly and can be very dangerous.
The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) has given statements warning podiatrists and patients alike about trends of wanting cosmetic surgery to improve the appearance of the foot and ankle. They state that some ladies are asking for surgery to thin out the size of their overall foot, shorten their toes and even to add cushion to their heels. The reasoning? So that they can fit into high fashion heels comfortably. The alteration of the foot due to surgery is a very major task and can result in infection, nerve injury and chronic pain is not performed appropriately.
Many podiatrists even see patients who need help fixing the adverse effects that were caused to their feet by cosmetic surgery. These patients have pain, trouble walking and an array of other issues due to unnecessary surgery.
The AOFAS defines cosmetic foot surgery as surgery that occurs only to improve the appearance of the foot. Most podiatrists recommend that foot surgery should be administered as a goal to relieve pain, improve the function of the foot and to enhance quality of life during normal day to day activity.
