At the onset of the winter season, we put away our open-toed shoes and replace them with closed footwear. This time of the year can be very tricky for our feet, especially for women.
Once you switch from open shoes to those fashionable pointed shoes and high heels, they can cause painful foot-related issues such as:
- Ankle and muscle pains;
- Bunions and hammertoes;
- Blisters and puncture wounds;
- Calluses and corns;
- Tendons and heel related injuries.
At Joseph Stuto, DPM, we recommend you follow a few simple steps so that you have no foot issues all year long:
Wider, closed shoes do the trick. Wear shoes with wide toe boxes. Don’t cramp up your toes causing unnecessary pressure on them.
Less use of pointy shoes. Don’t start off the season by excessively wearing your stylish pointy shoes. Enjoy a pain-free fall and winter season by wearing them in moderation.
Right shoe for the right activity. Those who have jobs that mostly require them to sit for a large part of their day can wear high heels. However, if your job requires you to move around a lot, do not wear high heels as it will take a toll on your feet and ankles.
Know when to change. If you experience pain due to your shoes, change them immediately. Keep an extra pair of comfortable shoes for backup.
- Extra padding doesn’t hurt: By investing in padding or custom orthotics, you can take the excessive pressure off your feet even when you are in those high heels.
