Winter can take a toll on our bodies, especially our feet and ankles. Freezing temperatures, icy conditions, and harsh elements can cause unique challenges for our feet. Today, Joseph C. Stuto, DPM, Joseph A. Stuto, DPM, Lisa Fuchs, DPM, and Momna Younas, DPM, at Stuto Foot Specialist Podiatry in Brooklyn, NY, share how you can tackle all the elements with an effective foot care routine.
3 Simple Winter Foot Care Tips:
Keep feet dry and warm (but not sweaty!). Wear proper shoes and socks, especially when dealing with winter precipitation as well as foot perspiration. Closed-toe shoes and boots with moisture-wicking socks can stop feet from becoming too damp. Some socks even have panels for ventilation or contain chemicals to prevent the growth of bacteria, draw moisture away from the skin, and reduce foot odor. Put on a new pair of shoes and socks if you find your feet feeling damp and sweaty. You can also use foot powder to keep feet clean and dry.
Wear the right footwear. Ensure your shoes are the correct size. Ill-fitted shoes can cause crowding of the toes, trap moisture, and reduce blood flow in the lower extremities. The best shoes are the ones that keep your feet healthy and safe. You will need waterproof, high tops, non-slip tread shoes during the cold and snowy winter months. Good winter shoes can reduce your risk for falls, fractures, frostbites, ankle sprains, and other winter foot and ankle problems.
Keep feet clean and skin hydrated. Wash and dry your feet daily. You may use a pumice stone to remove any dead skin or germs off your foot. Apply a good moisturizer to keep skin supple, smooth, and hydrated.
