3 Ways to Prevent Falls

September is National Falls Prevention Month, and at Stuto Foot Specialist Podiatry, we want to encourage everyone from children to seniors to take necessary steps to avoid the risk of injury from a fall. Falls have become a serious health concern in America, particularly among older adults (age 65+).

Here are a few ways to help avoid an accidental fall:

  1. Keep moving: Being active improves your overall health and well-being. Physical activity also helps lower your risk of falls and injuries associated with it. Activities like walking, running, and swimming can help you maintain healthy bones, muscles and improve various aspects of your movement and mobility (especially in older adults).
  2. Wear appropriate shoes: Be smart when it comes to wearing shoes. A shoe that doesn't fit you well could increase your risk of a fall. Throw away any worn-out shoes or ones that no longer fit you properly. Feet can change shape with age. Have your feet measured by a professional every time you shop for new shoes.
  3. Fall-proof your home: The best way to fall-proof your home is to light up your living space so that it is easy to avoid tripping on objects that are otherwise hard to see. Remove any extension cords, furniture, or coffee table from high-traffic areas.

Preventing falls is just one way to keep feet and ankles healthy. Your feet are your body's foundation so treat them right.
