High arches are not always painful; however, if they are causing you trouble, you should not ignore the signs your feet are giving you and seek professional help right away. Don’t let the pain reach a point where it becomes unbearable and adversely affects your mobility.

Leaving your high arches untreated may even lead to long-term problems like sprains, weakening of the ankle muscles, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and more.

The first thing to do is check if you have high arches. A simple test will point you in the right direction. Wet your feet, stand on a smooth surface and examine your imprint. If the larger area under your feet is not visible in the imprint, that means you have high arches.

Once that has been determined, here are a few measures you can adopt to avoid painful high arches:

  • Use orthotic inserts to support your arches and ensure proper balance.
  • Ankle braces are also extremely useful in supporting your feet.
  • Strengthening exercises like calf stretches and flexing your Achilles tendons helps in preventing sprains as well as improving stability.
  • Compression therapy is effective in reducing pain and soothing the arches.
